Understanding the causes of increased obesity prevalence has become an important topic in health research. However, there has yet been little consideration of the relationship between weight gain and alcohol consumption. In this paper, we study both the effect of alcohol consumption on obesity outcomes and obesity on alcohol consumption with particular emphasis on associated health outcomes such as diabetes and drunken driving fatalities. Using individual level data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) combined with state and county-level characteristics, we estimate these important relationships
