The impact of the Medicare Part D prescription benefits on generic drug use
Using pharmacy claim data that represented approximately 2.4 million unique subjects, the study finds that beneficiaries were slightly less likely to fill prescriptions for generic drugs vs. brand-name drugs in 2006 compared to 2005 (OR 0.95, 95% CI 0.94-0.95) as a result of Part D. The magnitude and direction of impact varies across 15 therapeutic classes. This analysis adjusted for individual-level characteristics including comorbidities and insurance plan generosity, socio-demographic characteristics measured through zip code-linked Census data, baseline differences between Part D and non-Part D enrollees, and time trend.
